Labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis is caused by an infection, either viral or bacterial, in the inner ear.  Usually, only one ear is affected.

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden onset of Hearing Loss
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Imbalance

These symptoms usually peak within 24 hours, but may last several more days.  The severity of the symptoms will then decrease, but, beacuse of the damage caused in the inner ear, you may still be left with permanent hearing loss, and may also have residual feelings of imbalance, dizziness, or vertigo.  This is especially noticeable with quick head or body movements.

Treatment Options

Fortunately, Vestibular Rehabilitation can help to eliminate your dizziness and imbalance.  Through habituation, gaze stability, and other balance exercises, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants can help you return to your previously active lifestyle.
